Longtime Fair Lawn Firefighter, Ex-Chief Richard Bente Sr. Dies

FAIR LAWN, N.J. — Richard C. Bente, Sr. of Fair Lawn died Dec. 22. he was 92 years old.

Born and raised in New York City, he lived in Fair Lawn for 65 years, proudly having served in the U.S. Navy. 

Richard earned a Bachelor’s degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University in Electrical Engineering. His long and dedicated service to fire safety included being a former chief and 40-year member of the Fair Lawn Volunteer Fire Department and a fire inspector with Fair Lawn and Elmwood Park. 

He also served as a longtime volunteer with the American Red Cross Braille Department alongside his wife, Jane.

Prior to retiring in 1980, he was an electrical engineer with NY Bell for many years.

Beloved husband of Jane (Waddel) Bente. Loving and devoted father of Richard “Rick” C. Bente, Jr., Chris H. Bente and wife Marianne, Ellen Oliver and the late Robert Bente. Cherished grandfather of Suzanne, Richard, Diane and Denise. Cherished great-grandfather of Brittaney, Steven, Riley, Morgan and JJ. Dear great-great grandfather of Adriel.

A private cremation was held.
